Movies This Week Part 2

Movies #2

This week, as well as the movies, I get to talk about the TV shows I just finished watching. I haven't writing about them yet because I don't consider them to be what I watched this week, more like what I've been watching once a week for the past thirteen weeks. But now that they're done, I can write about them.

Mob Psycho Season 2

It's an action comedy show about ghosts, but it's also genuinely one of the sweetest and most sincere TV shows you'll ever watch. It follows the adventures of Mob, who is basically God, but is extremely humble about it. Even though he's "the most powerful being in the world" he focuses on building better relationships and leading a better life without the help of his powers. Everybody he meets learns a lot from their interactions with him. It's a fantastically wholesome slice of life show disguised as an action ghost hunting show.

The Promised Neverland

This is a depressing show about orphans who are being farmed to eat. It's a great show, but there's a lot of depressing stuff in there. I don't really have much else to say.

And here are the movies:

Jules & Jim - 26 March 2019

This was an interesting one, I assumed it was going to be about a romance between a man (Jim) and a woman (Jules). Instead, it was about the friendship between the two men Jules & Jim and their decade spanning fight over a woman. To say this movie had a love triangle would be a massive understatement, the entire thing is basically just one big triangle. It was definitely an interesting movie to watch, with some good humor and strange romantic chemistry.

8th Grade - 27 March 2019

This one is another cheesy high school drama. There was some fun stuff in there, but there was also a lot of dull stuff, like when there's a phone call that lasts for five minutes without a cut, or that awkward car scene that goes on for five minutes without a cut, or that scene by the fire that goes on for five minutes without a cut. You get the idea, some of it drags on a bit, but there was some decent stuff.

Boogie Nights - 28 March 2019

This is a hilarious movie, the perfect representation of the porn industry. There are so many awful and depressing things going on, highlighting how disgusting that industry is, but it's presented with this sarcasm where all of the characters think what they're doing is high art. This contrast between Dirk  Diggler referring to himself as an "actor", giving a speech on how important his work is and the reality of the situation really makes for an entertaining watch, no matter how messed up the situations are.

Lolita (1961) - 28 March 2019

You can't go wrong with Kubrick, he knows how to make a good movie. Lolita is another great example of a disturbing love story, seems like we've had a lot of those this week. There's definately some questionable stuff in here (because, you know, it's Lolita), but it's a real engaging watch and even has some nice comedy with pretty much everything Clare Quilty says.

District 9 - 30 March 2019

I watched this one again with some buddies, it's a lot of fun. Great special effects on a low budget, with a great story about a guy turning into an alien. Between this and Tetsuo, I'm really being submersed into the "guy turns into a thing" genre.

The Scar (1976) - 31 March 2019

This movie was so boring. Just people talking about socialism for an hour and a half. I had none of it.

The King of Comedy - 31 March 2019

After watching The Scar, I needed something exciting. So I watched this, it's a Martin Scorsese movie, and you know how that is, you can't go wrong with Scorsese, he knows how to make a good movie. He's even had a song written about him:
The movie was a blast, the adventures of some poor delusional guy who wants to get a job as a TV standup comic. It's real similar to Boogie Nights now that I think about it, depressing situations and characters played off with lots of laughs. This was definately a good time.
