Midsommar

Here's a little bit of a longer review, Midsommar is a great movie and I'd recommend watching it, but this review might give a little too much away. Anyway, here it is.

This is the new movie from Ari Aster. It was a great horror movie. Extremely slow paced and a little bit pretentious, it was very disturbing. It is about a festival in Sweden taking place in the summer solstice. There's a great sense of dread built up at the start of the movie before the real horror is even close. The slow pacing at the start as Dani finds out what has happened to her family as well as her boyfriend's complete lack of sympathy perfectly lead into the later parts of the film. There's a great shot where she run's into the bathroom and it pans over the bathroom wall where it transitions into the plane bathroom, it's pretty flashy but also very effective and reminiscent of his first film Hereditary. As we get to the festival it seems pretty normal, if not a little awkward, then there's the inevitable decent into insanity. Since this movie is taking place in the solstice, there is virtually no darkness, all of the horror takes place in broad daylight and it's extremely effective. What works best about this film is the awkwardness, some of it is so slow and I had no idea what was happening or what was going to happen, but this was reflected in the american characters who were in the same boat, just a little confused at the weird festivities happening, taking it's time watching these events happening, standing by watching with curiosity until they realise something horrible is about to happen. Even when gruesome things were happening they passed it off as a way to learn about this different culture, it's a great way to characterise horror movie characters other that just making them extremely stupid. At the part where they realise that they should be getting out of there there's just not much they can do. It reminded me a lot of Rosemary's Baby, the very slow movement, where the real horror doesn't come from deaths or being chased, it comes from the hopelessness that there's nothing they can really do and the only thing left to do at the end is accept their fate. It was a really great horror movie and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more things this guy will make.

Here are some other movies (And TV) I've seen and less lengthy thoughts on them.

A silly so bad it's good movie. It's a great laugh and has some great quotable lines. Some of my favorite bits include hair cut continuity errors, dogs in the bin and rats in the pool.

This show is beautiful. It's so short but the direction is amazing, there's so much going on without words.

  1. Village of the Giants (1965) is also based on H.G. Wells' book Food of the Giants.
